Repurchasing stock is a far tougher call today for tech companies than in more solvent times with normal consumer spending, low unemployment and plenty of available credit, says Cyrus Lam, a director for KPMG Corporate Finance.

"It was in vogue a few years ago, but more companies are looking at holding cash however cheap the value of their stock gets," Lam said. "They either don't know whether the stock has reached its rock bottom, or they don't know if they will need that cash to run operations. Nobody knows where the bottom is."
